. We sent our legislative priorities to the Governing Council for review back in December. Our top choices as a section were: 1. Support public funding and state appropriations that support effective (and evidence-based) obesity prevention programs and other public health initiatives and evaluation targeted at reducing the impact of obesity and the disparities that exist related to obesity prevention. 2. Support legislation to make all NC Make all NC workplaces and public places smoke free 3. Support an increase cigarette tax by $1.00 and other tobacco products by a comparable amount. Index both to the national average (currently $1.18 for cigarettes). 4. Support funding for the State Employees Worksite Wellness Program · Over the past five years, the DHHS Worksite Wellness program has implemented a successful effort to improve physical activity and nutrition, reduce tobacco use, and decrease stress among DHHS state employees · An evidence-based Worksite Wellness Toolkit was developed by DPH and is be in g implemented in NC government agencies statewide to replicate the DHHS model. · Legislation passed by the General Assembly in 2007 made all state government owned and managed build in gs smoke-free. The State Employee Worksite Wellness program has provided education and tools on quitting tobacco to employees. · The State Employee Worksite Wellness program has been funded through the State Employee Health Plan. The Health Plan’s recent financial difficulty has led to elimination of funding for the program. Our plan for the future is to work on our part of the website, continue to sell cookbooks, plan our section of the annual meeting, and prepare for a new set of officers next year. Thank you!
