Mission Statement

North Carolina Public Health Association is an association of individuals and organizations working to improve the public’s health through political advocacy, public awareness, professional development, and the interface between research and practice.

The North Carolina Public Health Association is the leading professional association for people dedicated to promoting and protecting the health and environment of all North Carolinians.

The Guiding Principles of the North Carolina Public Health Association are: integrity, dignity and respect, pride and commitment, inclusion and education for individuals and communities


Critical Concerns  and Goals:

Reach Consensus on Best Possible Structure for PH Associations in NC with Eastern & Western Districts

1. Create official affiliates of NCPHA East/West/SOPHE/Nutrition Directors/Health Directors

a. Hold meeting of potential stakeholder groups to discuss affiliation and working together. Include Legislators and Dr. Engle

i. Do you want an NCPHA?

1. Lobby

2. Focus on Issues. What are the issues?

3. Unified message

4. Meetings

5. Schools

b. Come together to take advantage of economic/legislative crisis

c. ID Broadness of Issues

d. How to reduce silo meetings.

2. Increase membership by 10%/year for next 3 years

a. Bring in paying affiliates and more people

b. Membership recruitment Plan

i. Word of mouth

ii. Marketing

iii. Message of lobby efforts

iv. Need a membership chair.

c. New membership form

d. How to engage Boards of Health members

e. How to bring in AHECs/Jackie Rollins Wynn

f. Leadership recruitment effort

i. Commitment/Role models

ii. President & Executive Committee present to fall ‘09

3. Support 75%of operating costs within 3 years

a. Bring in paying affliliates

i. Tied to restructuring

b. How to add staff (i.e. Event Planner)

c. Fundraising events

i. Breakfast in May

ii. Growing Healthy Futures Endowment

iii. Public Health Month (May) Special Event

iv. Contract with a fundraiser (performance based)

v. Fundraiser meal or event (focus on Public Health)

4. Membership Committee to consider fees and membership form

5. Identify, recruit and orient new diverse NCPHA Leadership on an ongoing basis

a. Members-at-large: Better utilization

b. Mentor new members so that they are better informed about NCPHA and move up the leadership ladder (meeting of new officers)

c. Find process for developing leadership

d. Ask for specific volunteers to do specific tasks

i. Create a process to do this Fall’09

e. Accreditation to help increase members

f. Membership form and email to ask for commitment and to volunteer

g. Give new people a real job to do
