Laboratory
Introduction
Welcome to the world of wonder, the world of science.
The most exciting and versatile area in public health could
very well be the laboratory section. There is no limit to
our scope. One minute we may be testing a human for shigella
(Child Health section) or HIV (STD-CD) or general wellness
(Nursing), the next a dog for rabies (Animal Control), the
next a piece of chicken from a restaurant for salmonella
or drinking water from a well for E. Coli (Environmental
Health). Our arms of knowledge encompass a multitude of divisions
in the public health arena. We invite you to
join our world of wonder!
History
In 1942 a resolution was passed by the North Carolina Public
Health Association creating the Laboratory Section. On October
31, 1944, a group of laboratory workers, members of the North
Carolina Public Health Association, met in the Library of
the North Carolina State Laboratory of Hygiene. There they
organized a Laboratory Section of the North Carolina Public
Health Association. The Organization of the Section was under
the leadership of the late Dr. John H. Hamilton. A tentative
constitution was read by the late Mr. J. B. Edwards of Wilmington
and after short discussion, the constitution was adopted.
The constitution was revised in 1954 and adopted in 1955.
